Godward Paintings
John William Godward brought the world of art some exciting paintings towards the end of the Pre-Raphaelite and Neo-Classicist periods of the late 19th century. Godward followed on from the teachings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema but his work was considered to be somewhat out of date in style when more contemporary artists started to appear, spearheaded by Cubist Pablo Picasso. Picasso’s genius and innovation led to other artists falling back in popularity, production and later even motivation. This was symbolised by Godward who famously committed suicide in order to escape a world with him and Picasso in it.
El Greco PaintingsEl Greco is a famous Greek artist who produced some extraordinary paintings across the 16th and 17th centuries. El Greco’s paintings used original styles and painting techniques which helped to develop and inspire new art movements, most notably Expressionism and Cubism. At the time of his career, El Greco’s work was undoubtably ground breaking.
Holbein PaintingsHans Holbein the Younger was a famous German artist from the 15th and 16th century. Holbein was a German painter whose works were in the traditional Northern Renaissance style of the time. Despite his German links, he is actually best known for his portraits of the British monarchy, most notably Henry VIII. Several Henry VIII portrait paintings are known to have been completed by Holbein, with some other remaining undetermined as to the originator.
